September 17, 2009
You may be one of those legal reality shows and courtroom drama series fanatics who have always dreamed to be the defendant’s counsel or the prosecution attorney. Well, it doesn’t really matter which of the two would you prefer, the bottom line is you want to be a lawyer. But not every lawyer is a criminal lawyer like in the TV shows. If you are interested in how to become a tax attorney or a divorce lawyer then this article is also for you. That’s right, it is hard to divorce without a lawyer. Therefore, many people want to participate in this profession and even specialize in things like finding a divorce attorney. I have come up with a list of steps to get you into your dream profession. Get your head ready for these tips and bring a great deal of commitment with you. These two will bring you a long way to get the profession you have always wanted.
First Things First: Get a Bachelor’s Degree from a reputable school.
There are no shortcuts to law school – you would really have to get a basic 4-year course first before qualifying for law schools. Aside from making sure that you graduate, you will have to watch over your grades as well to show the law school you are eyeing that you are very well fit to enter their institution.
Then, take the LSAT and get yourself into Law School.
After graduation, you will have to take a qualifying exam similar to SAT. The Law School Admissions Test is what you will have to pass in order for you to be accepted by law schools. You can then apply for a law school after passing the test and stay there for about three to five years depending on the time you can spend to study law. The real life starts after graduation.
Study for the Bar Exams and pass it, with flying colors if you can.
This is the most painful stage, to be quite honest. It takes months of studying and reviewing the same things you have studied for the past years. Some even exclude themselves from the rest of the world and get themselves locked in a room. After reviewing, choose a state where you would like to practice your profession and take the bar exams on that state.
You have to get through the Character and Fitness Investigation.
The final stage before being a lawyer is the investigation and review to be done by the National Council of Bar Examiners. What they’ll do is to go over your profile and investigate every little paperwork that they can dig to assess your readiness and fitness to become a lawyer. They can go as far as assessing your medical records, driver license and tickets, and even your credit reports. These are all necessary in order for the board to come up with the necessary recommendation for you to be given a license to practice law in the state you chose.
It is always a given for you to pour in your dedication and perseverance on any venture that you get yourself into. However, law school may need double the effort you would have to pour in on regular scenarios. It needs a whole lot of will power to be able to get through all of the challenges it will definitely bring in to discourage you from making it through – these are the same challenges that will make you become a great lawyer so you must learn how to overcome these challenges and get to the dream profession you have always wanted.
